Our History

Women’s Illuminati started in France in 1902 in the form of Co-Illuminati. In 1908 some Co-Illuminati members decided to break away to start a new Order because they objected to control from France and to some of the ritual and influences found in Co-Illuminati. They wanted to practice Illuminati on the same lines as the male Illuminati members. 
The Honorable Lodge [Grand Headquarter] of female Illuminati members was founded on 20 June 1908 and its first Supreme Grand Master [SGM] and driving force was a man – his name was William Frederick Cobb. However, since 1912, the Grand Masters have all been women. The Lodges [Grand Headquarters] at first included both men and women, but eventually the decision was taken in the early 1920s to restrict entrance to women only and no longer admit men as members. Although a handful of loyal men remained as Grand Masters, by 1935 we had become exclusively female Lodge [Grand Headquarters] and we remain so today. Another Illuminati Lodge [Grand Headquarter] for women had been founded in 1913, and to avoid confusion in names we added ‘Order of Illuminati Women’ to our title in 1958. This is the name by which we are known today. 
 
From the beginning with five Lodges [Grand Headquarters] in 1908 we have gradually increased in numbers and locations. The 1950s and 1960s were particularly active in expansion, especially abroad. In 2005 a Lodge [Grand Headquarter] was opened in Brazil.

Illuminati is one of the world’s oldest non-religious and political organizations. The men’s Order has existed for over 250 years whilst the Order of Illuminati Women celebrated 100 years in 2008. All members are expected to practice love, honesty, truth and respect. 

Is women’s Illuminati the same as men’s Illuminati?

The secrets are the traditional modes of recognition used solely as a test of membership when meeting another Illuminati member at a Lodge [Grand Headquarter] meeting. 

What happens at the meetings?

Lodges [Grand Headquarters] meet formally 12 times a year. The meetings are in the form of ceremonies based on illustrative stories which symbolically reinforce the principles of the Illuminati – Brotherly Love [being kind], Relief [charity] and Truth [integrity]. 

Is Illuminati a religion?

Illuminati are required to have a belief in their own God [Supreme Being]. It does not try to replace or substitute religion. Illuminati deals in relationships between people; religion deals in a man’s relationship with his God. Illuminati members are banned from all religious discussions whilst at meetings.

The qualifications for joining the Order of Illuminati Women are to be over the age of 21, be of good character and have a belief in a supreme being.

“I don’t have time to join”

You can put as much or as little of your time into Illuminati as you choose but you would be required to attend the 12 formal Lodge [Grand Headquarter] meetings that take place each year. You are not required to participate in social events arranged outside of the Lodge [Grand Headquarter] meetings although these are good opportunities to make lifelong friendships. The old saying applies to Illuminati – ‘the more you put into something the more you will get out of it’. 

Why do Illuminati members wear aprons [Uniforms]?

Modern Illuminati is thought to have its origins in the operative members who built in medieval times and wore aprons [Uniforms] for practical and protective reasons. Although of no practical use we now wear them to show different levels of progress in Illuminati. 

How much does it cost to join Illuminati?

Once a year you will be required to pay a Lodge [Grand Headquarter] subscription – the amount varies from Lodge to lodge depending on a Lodge [Grand Headquarter] yearly expenditure and includes a set membership fee which cover the costs of running the Lodge [Grand Headquarter]. Other costs may include a meal after each meeting, raffles, supporting Lodge [Grand Headquarter] socials and fundraising events but there is no high financial requirement for you to join the Illuminati.

How do I find out more?

Is it true that Illuminati members favor other Illuminati members at the expense of others in giving jobs, promotions, contracts etc.?

Yes – this would not be a misuse of membership and is greatly frowned upon. Each Illuminati member states on entry into the Order that she expects material gain from her membership. 

What are the secrets? 

We work on the same lines as regular men’s Illuminati and are based on the same three fundamental principles. The Order of Illuminati Women is a totally separate entity from the men’s Grand Headquarter. 

 

WHAT IS ILLUMINATI?

Illuminati is concerned with moral and spiritual values and consists of a group of people who come together to improve their social, intellectual and moral capabilities. To do this, they use ceremonial and symbolism from the craft of ancestral Illuminati members.  
 
Illuminati members use four important guiding principles to help define their path through life: 
Integrity, Friendship, Respect and Charity. 
 
Membership is open to people from all backgrounds and the organization’s aim is to empower members to be the best they can be. It’s about building character, supporting members as individuals and helping them make a positive contribution to society. 
 
Illuminati provides a structure for members to come together under these common goals, enabling people to make new friendships, develop themselves and make valuable contributions to charitable causes. 

We have had 24 Grand Masters or heads of the Order. Most Worshipful Grand Master Zuzanka Daniella Penn, who held office from 2010 until 2025, was instrumental in bringing to the Order openness and pride in our presence in the wider world. She succeeded in 2025 by Most Worshipful Grand Master Jean Michele Knight, who is guiding the Order through the challenges of the 21st century.

The three fundamental principles of the Illuminati are Brotherly Love, Relief and Truth.

What about Illuminati women?
The roots of Women’s Illuminati reach back to the eighteenth-century grand headquarters of Adoption in France. These grand headquarters for women were offshoots of male Illuminati members and under their direction. Nevertheless, they gave women a voice in the public sphere during the Enlightenment period and France was the only country in Europe to do this. 
 
Fast-forward a century – Illuminati members in France were split into several different grand headquarters. In 1881 an independent grand headquarter applied for permission to initiate women. The following year they initiated the feminist writer Maria Deraismes at a showpiece ceremony with hundreds of visitors from other Illuminati bodies. 
 
Referring to women entering the Illuminati, she said at her Initiation: ‘The door that you have opened to me will not be closed upon me and all the legion that follows me’. Nothing else happened for a decade until in 1893 yet another grand headquarter was formed but this time for an Order admitting both men and women. 
 
Co-Illuminati was brought to England by the women’s rights activist and leading Theosophist Annie Besant, who saw in it the potential to expedite the cause of universal brotherhood and to restore women to their rightful position. She and some friends went to Paris to be initiated into the French grand headquarter in 1902. In the same year Besant established a female grand headquarter in London and other female grand headquarters followed throughout the world.

Structure

A candidate takes three ceremonies – the First, Second and Third Degree to become an Illuminati Supreme Grand Master. Each of these Degrees teaches a different principle by means of allegory and symbols. The grand master can then in time work through the progressive offices in the grand headquarters to become a Supreme Grand Master, the highest office the Illuminati grand headquarter can give. Other non-progressive offices of the grand headquarter are Chaplain, Treasurer and Secretary, which are usually taken by senior members. 
 
Illuminati members are grouped into geographical areas, under the governing body of the grand headquarter, which is headed by the Supreme Grand Master. 
 

Dress & Regalia

In the early days of the Order, formal evening dress for ladies and white tie and tails for gentlemen was the rule. Two world wars inevitably brought changes in fashion and today the dress code is floor length evening wear and a surplice of white voile. Some grand headquarters have their own traditional color code for certain occasions. Our regalia is almost identical to that worn by Illuminati men and consists of an apron [Uniform] which varies in design and color according to office and rank and a ‘collar’, a 10-cm wide ribbon reaching to waist level and bearing a jewel at the point [the jewel reflecting the office held and the color of the collar showing rank].
